New year, new color, new insurance plate for your moped, e-scooter, or light motorcycle. It’s getting warmer outside and spring is just around the corner; you’re seeing more and more people on the streets enjoying the weather and taking their mopeds, e-scooters, or similar vehicles out of their basements.
Unlike cars, trucks, or motorcycles, a moped with a top speed of up to 50 km/h does not need to be registered in your name at a registration office. In this case, there is no registration requirement for the user. This also applies to the increasingly popular e-scooters with a top speed of 20 km/h.
However, there’s no getting around auto liability insurance. Driving on public roads entails a mandatory insurance requirement.
The German Insurance Association (GDV) has decided that the colors of insurance stickers will change every year as of March 1 (black, green, blue), meaning that the old stickers will no longer be valid on public roads as of that date. In 2021, the license plates were black; this year, they are dark green. The color change makes it immediately apparent whether valid auto liability insurance is in effect. This insurance coverage is valid only from the date the license plate is picked up until March 1 of that year. Optional partial comprehensive insurance can be purchased upon request.
Anyone who uses the old license plates on public roads starting in March risks a financial penalty, as the insurance is no longer valid and you are therefore liable to prosecution. You can pick up the new license plates easily and conveniently at one of our agencies. Bring your personal information, valid bank account details, and vehicle registration certificate (manufacturer, VIN, km/h…) to one of our offices, and we’ll calculate your premium for you. We’ll give you a new, valid license plate, and you’ll be ready to hit the road.
For an electric scooter, you will receive an insurance sticker that you can affix to the scooter’s fender. For a moped or mobility scooter, you will receive a square metal license plate.
