8. May 2022Car Sales with Test Drives

You’re thinking about buying a new car or simply selling your old one. A buyer has shown clear interest and wants to buy your car, but would like to schedule a test drive first. The questions are clear: “What do I need to keep in mind, and what do I need to tell my insurance company?”
When you sell your car, it’s always a good idea to draw up a sales contract, whether you’re selling to a private individual or a dealer. You can find blank sales contracts quickly and easily online. Just one click: print it out, fill it in, and send it to us by mail or email, or drop it off at our agency. Your auto insurance will be billed up to the date of sale, and you’ll receive a refund for any overpayment. You’ll also no longer have to pay vehicle tax once the car has been deregistered. However, submitting the sales contract isn’t mandatory, because as soon as the car is deregistered, the relevant registration authority will notify us.
The buyer would like to take the car for a test drive first to make sure everything is in top condition. In this case, you can add the buyer to your insurance policy free of charge for one day. Please note: In the event of an accident, your insurance will cover the damages.
But be careful—even after the sale is finalized through a purchase agreement, there are still potential pitfalls. If you’ve sold your car and given the buyer your license plates for the transfer, your insurer remains liable to a certain extent despite the sales contract. This is stipulated by the Insurance Contract Act (VVG). This means that if the buyer is involved in an accident while using your license plates, your insurance must cover the damages.
