Wow, a deer on the road

Every day, you wake up in the morning, get ready, and drive to work. Once you're in the car, you admire the dawn and set off. But then everything turns out differently than you'd hoped

The highway is closed, so they have no choice but to take the country road. The morning radio show is playing in the background, warning listeners about the fog. You take your eyes off the road for just a moment, and suddenly there’s a loud crash. You get out of the car and see a deer lying motionless on the hood of your car. The car is clearly damaged—but what do you do now?!

Accidents involving wildlife are not uncommon—and they can be dangerous. Unfortunately, collisions with wildlife are becoming increasingly frequent on rural roads and in forested areas. Accidents involving game or animals of any kind are often impossible to prevent. Even in driver’s ed, you learn that trying to swerve out of the way usually makes the situation even more dangerous. Even if a collision does occur, you’re not on your own.

Many insurance companies now provide coverage for collisions with animals of all kinds (dogs, cats, cows, etc.) and do not limit their coverage to game animals alone.

When you take out auto insurance, the agents will always ask you what type of coverage you want. In other words, do you want only auto liability insurance, or would you also like partial or comprehensive coverage?

Liability insurance is a mandatory type of insurance that covers damage to other cars or injuries to other people if you are at fault in an accident. It does not cover damage to your own car. In addition, you can arrange for expanded coverage, specifically either partial coverage or comprehensive coverage. Anyone who wants to protect their car and avoid financial hardship in the event of glass breakage (rock chips), fire, theft, damage caused by martens, or collisions with animals of any kind should take out partial coverage. Comprehensive insurance is also an optional extension and covers damage caused by vandalism, damage to your car resulting from an accident you caused, and damage resulting from a hit-and-run.

Now the only question left is whether the insurance will cover everything or if I’ll have to pay something out of pocket. With voluntary comprehensive insurance policies, a deductible is usually agreed upon with the customer. This means: If you have partial comprehensive coverage with a €150 deductible, that amount will be deducted from the total payout in the event of a claim.

Amount of damage: 600€, deductible: 150€, payout amount: 450€

Good to know:

If you have parked your car and it collides with an animal, partial collision coverage does not apply in this case.
